Lion's Mane in MemoFix: Dose, Role & Evidence

Lion's Mane is the ingredient behind MemoFix's neurogenesis claims — a genuinely interesting mechanism, though one where the lab research is well ahead of the human research.

What it is

Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is an edible medicinal mushroom, distinctive-looking and used in both cuisine and traditional medicine across East Asia. Its compounds of interest are hericenones (in the fruiting body) and erinacines (in the mycelium).

The NGF mechanism

The reason Lion's Mane appears in nootropic formulas is its researched association with Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) — proteins involved in the growth, maintenance, and survival of neurons. Laboratory and animal studies have shown Lion's Mane compounds stimulating NGF production fairly consistently.

Where the evidence is thinner

It's worth being direct: much of the strongest NGF research is in cell cultures and animal models. Human trials exist and some report cognitive improvements, but they're smaller, fewer, and shorter than the Bacopa literature. There's also an open question about how much of these compounds cross the blood-brain barrier in humans at supplement doses.

About the 500mg dose

500mg is a moderate dose relative to the range used in human studies, some of which have used higher amounts (1,000mg or more daily, often split into multiple doses). This is worth factoring into expectations for this ingredient specifically.

The honest summary

Lion's Mane has a genuinely interesting, biologically plausible mechanism and a good safety profile. The human evidence for cognitive benefit is promising but considerably less established than the mechanism's popularity would suggest.
