What it is

The acetylcholinesterase mechanism

Acetylcholinesterase is the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine after it has done its job at the synapse. Huperzine A inhibits that enzyme, meaning acetylcholine stays available longer. This is the same general mechanism class as some prescription drugs used in Alzheimer's treatment — though at very different doses and in a very different regulatory category.

Why that comparison needs care

The mechanistic overlap with prescription cholinesterase inhibitors sometimes gets used in marketing to imply equivalence.
