Ginkgo Biloba in MemoFix: Dose, Role & Evidence

Ginkgo has been studied more extensively than almost any other herbal nootropic — which means we can be unusually specific about both what it does and what it doesn't do.

What it is

Ginkgo Biloba extract comes from the leaves of the ginkgo tree, one of the oldest surviving tree species. Standardized extracts are typically measured by their content of flavone glycosides (around 24%) and terpene lactones (around 6%).

The circulation mechanism

Ginkgo's primary researched mechanism is improving microcirculation — blood flow through the small vessels supplying brain tissue. Better perfusion means more efficient oxygen and nutrient delivery, which is the rationale for its inclusion in a cognitive formula.

What the large trials found

Ginkgo has been through large, well-funded trials — including studies specifically testing whether it prevents cognitive decline or dementia in older adults. Those prevention trials largely did not find a protective effect, which is an important and often-omitted piece of context. Research on shorter-term cognitive measures in healthy adults has been more mixed, with some studies showing modest benefits.

About the 120mg dose

120mg daily is a standard, commonly studied dose — many clinical trials have used between 120mg and 240mg daily of standardized extract.

An important interaction warning

Ginkgo has mild blood-thinning properties and can interact with anticoagulant and antiplatelet medications, including warfarin and aspirin. It may also be relevant before surgery.
