Exercise and Cognition: The Most Evidence-Backed Brain Intervention

If cognitive health interventions were ranked purely by weight of evidence, exercise would sit comfortably above every supplement on the market.

What the research shows

Aerobic exercise has been associated with improved executive function, better memory performance, and in some studies increased hippocampal volume — the brain region central to memory formation. The evidence spans observational studies, randomized trials, and mechanistic research.

The BDNF connection

Exercise has been shown to increase BDNF, the neurotrophin involved in neuron growth and survival. This is notable in context: it's the same protein that Lion's Mane supplementation is researched for influencing — but the exercise evidence in humans is considerably more established.

How much is needed

Public health guidelines generally recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity weekly plus muscle-strengthening on two or more days. Cognitive research suggests benefits appear at these ordinary levels — this isn't about athletic training.

Aerobic vs. resistance training

Aerobic exercise has the larger body of cognitive research behind it, but resistance training has its own supporting evidence, particularly for executive function in older adults. A combination is a reasonable approach rather than choosing one.

Why consistency beats intensity

The cognitive benefits associated with exercise appear tied to regular, sustained activity rather than occasional intense sessions. A daily walk maintained for years likely does more than a punishing routine abandoned after a month.

Where this leaves supplements

Not as a replacement. A nootropic taken by someone sedentary isn't substituting for the effect of regular movement — it's a much smaller intervention layered onto a much larger unaddressed one.
