What acetylcholine does

Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter involved in attention, learning, and memory formation. Its importance is illustrated by the fact that several prescription drugs for Alzheimer's work by preserving acetylcholine levels — the neurotransmitter's role in memory is well established, not speculative.

Why the choline source matters

The body synthesizes acetylcholine from choline. But not all choline sources reach the brain equally well — basic choline salts like choline bitartrate cross the blood-brain barrier relatively poorly. Alpha-GPC is among the more bioavailable forms, which is why nootropic formulas pay more for it.

What supplementation can realistically do

Here's the honest framing: if choline availability isn't limiting your acetylcholine synthesis, supplying more may not increase acetylcholine much.
